A cup of Joe

This week I attended the re-branding launch party for Longbottom Coffee in Hillsboro, Oregon. I learned so much about the little beans they use. It got me thinking… with all these beans consumed around the world, are there any studied health benefits? I went on the hunt to research all I could find out about coffee. Here is what I found out about your daily cup of Joe, and how it benefits your health.

When I talk about coffee let’s get one thing straight…I am not talking about a Venti, Iced, Carmel Macchiaot, with whip, add Carmel drizzle on top! I am talking about brewing, from ground beans, plain old black coffee. All the little extras end up being more of a hinderance to your health.

A recent article on Medscape by Sandra Adamson Fryhofer, MD reports:

  • “In a study of coffee consumption and risk for stroke in women, women who drank 1-5 cups of coffee a day cut their risk for stroke by 25%.[4]
  • “Drinking 4 or more cups of coffee a day may lower the risk for endometrial cancer by 25% as compared with drinking less than 1 cup a day.”

Now that is a coffee maker!

Coffee also:

  • contains antioxidants
  • has been shown to reduce inflammation

A new study presented by Medscape News stated:

  • “In a 10-year cohort study of more than 50,000 older women, investigators found that compared with those who drank 1 cup or less of caffeinated coffee per week, those who drank 2 to 3 cups per day had a 15% decreased risk for depression, and those who drank 4 cups or more had a 20% decreased risk.”
  • The study suggests that caffeinated drinks like soda, tea, decaf coffee, and even chocolate did not lower depression rates. Drink the real thing for the benefits.

This is great news for all you coffee drinkers! Non- coffee drinker out there, I am not recommending that you start drinking cups and cups of coffee to get these benefits. I personally don’t drink coffee due to being very sensitive to caffeine. But if you are a regular coffee drinker, it’s good to know you are getting antioxidants, increasing your mood, and lowering your risk of stroke! Who knew little coffee beans could do all that?
